Lucas Update for Thursday
Lucas continues to make marked improvements. They started to allow us to feed him yesterday. He only ate for about 5 minutes the first time, but did much better later in the day and ate like a champ. From what they tell us, he ate wonderfully overnight as well; he did the same again this morning.

One of the more exciting pieces of news is that they took him off of his IV today since he was doing so well with his feedings. They did notice a slightly low sodium level, but they believe that it's directly related to what's going on with his heart. As his heart improves, the sodium level should self-correct. If it dips lower than they like, they can get him a sodium supplement. No big deal. :-)

At this point, it's simple little things that really show how well he's doing. For example, they moved him from an isolette into a regular crib. The took his bed in his crib from being angled up at the head end of the bed to being flat so that "he could get used to that." We found that they had him in a onsie this morning; up until now, they had only wrapped him up tightly in blankets. They're little steps, but each gets him that much closer to going home. That likely won't be until next week at the earliest, however.

Turning a bit inward here, Anna and I are doing quite well, too. We're supporting each other a lot, but our focus is mainly with the kids -- all 4 of them.

We're taking the boys to school and Katelyn to the sitter's in the morning so that they keep their routine, then heading down to the hospital for the day. We've been leaving here at around 4:15 - 4:30 so that we can pick up the older kids from the sitter's at a normal time, then spending the evenings at home. As concerned as we are about Lucas, we're equally concerned about the other three, making sure that they're okay, that things don't get switched up on them too much.

The boys are old enough to understand that there's something wrong with their little brother and they seem to be getting a pretty good grasp on what's going on. Katelyn's simply too young. She asked if she could see her little brother last night and that kinda tore us up. The doctors and nurses tell us that they might be able to arrange that for us this evening. We can hope...

Lastly, thank you for all the support over the last few days. It means more than you could ever know.
