Breaking News from CNN
Reported at 5:01 AM CDT: A new CNN/ORC International poll indicates Americans are split on whether the Supreme Court is doing a good job, with 48% of the public saying they approve of the job the Court is doing and an equal amount saying they disapprove. [ See More ]

There is, however, an ideological divide. Fifty-three percent of liberals and 58% of moderates, but only 37% of conservatives, say that they approve of the court.

Among the key cases the court is still to rule on this month, those polled had mixed opinions. Americans said they were against affirmative action in college admissions -- at the core in Fisher v. the University of Texas at Austin -- with nearly seven in 10 disapproving of affirmative action admissions programs at colleges and law schools that give racial preferences to minority applicants and 29% saying they disagree.

They were evenly divided about whether the Voting Rights Act is still necessary, the central issue in the Shelby County, Alabama v. Holder case, with 48% saying yes and 50% saying no.

And they indicated strong support of both same-sex marriage cases. In the main question of Hollingsworth v. Perry, focused on a California statute, 55% of Americans support same-sex marriage, with 44% opposed. At the core of Windsor v. U.S., which is about the federal Defense of Marriage Act, 60% say the federal government should recognize same-sex marriages performed in states that allow them, with 39% saying they disagree.

The poll was conducted June 11-13, with 1,014 adults nationwide questioned by telephone. The survey's overall sampling error is plus or minus three percentage points.
